Featured Game - Skies of Arcadia Legends (Gamecube)

Title: Skies of Arcadia Legends (Gamecube)
Format: Nintendo Gamecube Console (also plays on Wii)

Sky pirates, privateers, a hidden civilisation, an evil empire and more! Skies of Arcadia Legends is a classic exploration RPG for the Nintendo Gamecube. A port of an earlier Dreamcast title, small sidequests were removed in favour of enhanced graphics and gameplay. The result is a gorgeous-looking game with an excellent plot that keeps you hooked right up until the bitter end.

We replayed this on the Wii recently, and it has lost none of its charm for the new console. If you are going to play it on the wii however you will need two things: the classic controller and a Gamecube memory card to save your game.

Featured Game - Ghostbusters (PS3)

Title: Ghostbusters (PS3)
Format: Sony PlayStation 3

Released on a range of consoles, we played this on the PS3 version. The game is a light hearted follow-on from the films, where the four Ghostbusters have hired you as their new "Experimental Equipment Technician" (read "Guinnea pig").

With the return of well-known faces from the films, a strong script, and great characters the game can provide hours of enjoyment - particualrly for fans. In places the game is rather linear, and can become a little standard. However, any boredom is quickly dispelled by the range of one-liners delivered by the original cast and a chance to see notable characters again.

A PS3 Special Edition was also released which contains the film on blu-ray and can be distinguished from the usual release by the blue tint on the cover, instead of standard green.

Featured Game - Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (DS)

Name: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (Nintendo DS)
Format: Nintendo DS

With the recent release of Miles Edgeworth Investigations, It seems like a good time to take a look back at the game that started the series. Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney was originally released for the GBA, but with an added chapter and updated graphics and sound, it became an early hit on the DS.

Phoenix "Nick" Wright is a trainee defense attorney, who we join at the start of his first case. Under the tutelage of Mia Fey, he has to defend a series of murder cases against Miles Edgeworth a prosecutor with a perfect record and an old rival of Phoenix. Through the course of the game we watch Phoenix develop from a rookie into an experienced attorney with his own assistant, who has to unravel past cases to resolve the mystery behind his mentor - and his opponent.

Gameplay-wise, this is the game that resulted in the classic cry of "Objection!" from a generation of gamers.

Featured Game - Endless Ocean 2 (Wii)

Title: Endless Ocean 2: Adventures of the Deep (Wii)
Console: Nintendo Wii

The sequel to Arika's Wii launch title, Endless Ocean 2 takes you back to diving. The dives have an expanded scope this time, and the plot travels through the game from basic search and retrieval to more complex plots.

While Endless Ocean was possibly the most relaxing game ever, the sequel adds action to the mix. Early encounters with an aggressive humpback and predatory fish make it a more eventful game than the original. Its a good game.

In my personal opinion, I actually prefered the original for its greater focus on diving and exploration, but that isn't going to stop me finishing this one since it's a good game - just different.

Featured Games: a new feature on the blog

Each Friday we are releasing a new entry on the blog, which is our Featured Game for the week. The Featured Game has one basic rule:

No new releases. Given the cost of new releases on the current consoles the idea of our Featured Game hope is to promote mid-range or often overlooked games which can provide a solid playing experience without breaking the bank.

Otherwise it will simply be highlighting games the writers have played and enjoyed - and hope that someone else can enjoy.
